Pūhoro STEMM Academy was founded to support Māori in pursuing a STEM-related career and the next generation of Māori scientists in New Zealand.
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEMM acknowledges mātauranga Māori and declares that STEM exists within mātauranga.
Medtech partnership with Pūhoro
Since partnering with Pūhoro, Medtech has hosted over ten workshops, with 25-30 students attending each. The workshops encourage students to be interested in a career working in the health tech industry.
Hosted by Medtech’s Learning Consultants, the workshop starts with them introducing themselves and describing the career paths that have led them to where they are today. It also introduces Medtech and its Practice Management System (PMS), including its role in healthcare and its importance for healthcare administration and patient care. The Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is also explained, highlighting the planning, designing, building, and testing stages. In the second half of the workshop, the students get to try using Medtech’s software themselves.
Opportunities in health tech
The workshops highlight all the roles you could have at a health tech company and that they don’t need to train as a doctor or nurse to work in healthcare; there are plenty of other roles in the healthcare ecosystem that help doctors, nurses, and patients have a smoother and better experience.
Together, Pūhoro and Medtech are committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion and supporting Māori students’ exploration of careers in STEM.
