The current state of patient management systems (PMS)<\/h3>\n

Tim addresses patient management systems<\/a><\/strong> (PMS), highlighting that the current PMS market is not very diverse. The idea that it could be a bit more dynamic is perfect because it might stimulate innovation and change. Geoff agrees and believes that vendors are shifting away from trying to do everything for their users, which is essential since general practice is so diverse. Practices need to think about future-proofing and doing what matters most for their practices and patients.<\/p>\n

The importance of future-proofing<\/h3>\n

When asked what PMSs could do better, Geoff points out that traditionally, they have been designed by GPs for GPs rather than for a practice as a whole. This means they are missing vital functionality requirements such as administration and running of the business and non-GP clinicians using the software. \u201cThe way that I think we need to look at it is how do you allow the flexibility and the need for what your system is doing,\u201d says Geoff. For example, rather than having one option for a patient portal and kiosk tied to a PMS, instead having the ability to look at all patient portals available in the market and integrate one best suited to the practice needs. This also allows the PMS vendor to focus on creating a good PMS rather than trying to create everything.<\/p>\n

Allowing for flexibility for healthcare professionals<\/h3>\n

Geoff explains that it is up to the PMS vendor to ensure that the product allows for this level of flexibility. In New Zealand, Medtech<\/a> has done this through APIs around the product. APIs allow the data structures and databases to communicate through standard code, allowing developers to build applications and functionalities that can be offered to Medtech customers through their PMS. This could include a triage process or front-door experience that could significantly improve the overall user experience for practices and patients. This approach fosters a versatile ecosystem where users and software partners can collaboratively develop applications that enhance the PMS experience. It promises a more customisable and future-proof system, ensuring practices can access tailored solutions that meet their unique needs and improve patient care. This open and collaborative approach marks a significant step towards more adaptable and integrated healthcare technology solutions.<\/p>\n
